Spring break is March 13 - 17 for St. Johns County and March 20 - 24 for Duval County! Whereas spring break for us may not be the Daytona Beach craziness of our younger years, you don't have to stay home all week with kids! Get a little wild with short trips, nature parks, Broadway shows, and more! And if you're working all week, no worries - there is plenty to do on our calendar in the afternoons and on the weekends before and after the break and a list of all the spring break camps around town. Spring Break Fun Idea #1: Head to a Spring!
Take a trip your kids will never forget! Pack a picnic or camp overnight at one of Florida's springs. They will love the clear water, the nature all around each swimming hole, and parents can relax and enjoy this natural wonder. Poe Springs, north of Gainesville has FREE entry and kids can easily use the steps to enter the water to see the sea grasses and fish. There's also a dock so you can fish on the Santa Fe River. Spring Break Fun Idea #2: See A Show!
If you didn't know, the First Coast has an opera! First Coast Opera, in St. Augustine, is hosting a great one for kids March 16 and March 18 and it is a great way to introduce kids to the opera! It is two one act plays, one of which is a family opera about putting the Big Bad Wolf on Trial for his mischief, and it has audience participation! You can get tickets by clicking HERE. Also, The Little Mermaid on Broadway is coming to Jacksonville from March 21 - 26, 2017 at the Times Union Center in Downtown Jax! Opening night is Kids Night on Broadway with lots of activities and you can get two tickets for half off with code MERMAID. Spring Break Idea #3: Head to Downtown Jax!
If you haven't been lately, take a trip to downtown Jax! You can play in the MOSH tree house and explore the museum's native plant garden, see the exhibits, and see some animals! Visit the Jacksonville Public Library main library for FREE programs and for the 1st Annual Book Fest on March 25 from 10am - 3:00pm! Ride the skyway for FREE during the week, visit Hemming Park for food trucks and music, or have a picnic on the north or south bank river walk. Visit Sweet Pete's Candy Mansion and play games on the second floor porch or take a candy making class! Spring Break Idea #4: Head Outside!
Jacksonville has hundreds of parks and thousands of acres of natural areas! Find a new park or playground to explore at the beach, in your neighborhood, or around town! We LOVE Boone Park in Riverside with the new playground equipment! We just found the circle wooden park in St. Johns Golf and Country Club off CR 210. We also love Julington Durbin Preserve in Bartram Park for hiking in a natural area. Or try camping! Find all the FREE places to camp by clicking here! Spring Break Idea #5: Spring Break Camp!
If you're working, or just need a day or half day break, find a spring break camp! MOSH has science fun, Smitty's Camp has been around since 1982 and they have canoeing, fishing, crafts, sports and more! Happy Acres Camp has horseback riding and tons of outdoor fun! SmART Girls, Inc. is visiting Marineland and going on a trip to Kennedy Space Center to have lunch with a female astronaut!! Spring Break Idea #6: Take a Day Trip!!
There's nothing like getting out of town for a change of pace. But its hard with kids! Why not take a day trip? You can have all the fun by traveling only a tank of gas away, save money, and keep it simple. Try a trip to Gainesville! They have bison at Paynes Prairie and the Florida Museum of Natural History has the new Frogs! A Chorus of Colors Exhibit! Or take a trip to Orlando to visit a theme park or enjoy Crayola Experience inside the Florida Mall!
Spring Break Idea #7: Spring Clean
Its always nice to get your house clean and tidy for spring, but did you know you can make money at the same time? The Finders Keepers Children's Consignment Sale is March 30 - April 1! So clean out your children's closets, tag your items and sell them at the sale!! Shop at the Morocco Shrine Center and April 1 is half price day-no fooling!!
