*We are thrilled to have Global Outreach Charter School sponsor our website; their sponsorship has not influenced our opionions.
Having done an exchange with the Netherlands through Rotary International in 2006, I know first hand how learning other cultures by being immersed in their language and lifestyle can help with international awareness, understanding and peace. Seeing another side from their shoes, learning a language, and living like another culture is not only fun, it is eye opening and is a once in a lifetime experience!
How neat it was to see another country's perspective about Americans and learn from their culture!!! That is exactly what local middle school students from Duval County charter school Global Outreach Charter Academy had the opportunity experience when they did an exchange with German and French students! This summer 25 French and 3 German middle school students with two teachers visited Jacksonville for two months. Local hosts and Global Outreach toured them around Florida visiting Sea World Orlando, Disney Quest, Miami Beach, and St. Augustine. They had a great time learning American culture, practicing English, and seeing our local sights! They learned new perspectives and enjoyed living like Americans for the summer!
Following their stay, four Jacksonville Global Outreach Charter School students visited Germany for two months. They learned the German culture, language, and cuisine by staying in the homes of German host families. They had the opportunity to attend a local school in Germany as well as tour local attractions like Hollywood Safaripark, Köllner Dom, a professional soccer game, and attend a World Champion and European Champion handball game. They also visited swim parks, a local museum, Detmolder Castle and ate at local German restaurants.
What an amazing experience for our local Jacksonville kids and the exchange students! These cultural exchanges are just part of the international charter school program. Each middle school student has the opportunity to travel abroad, there are many languages offered daily at the school, and there are many enrichment programs after school for students to enjoy. And best of all, it is a FREE Duval County charter school! What a great resource for students starting at the elementary level. My exchange wasn't until I had graduated from college and I can't imagine how learning about another culture could have influenced my life at a younger age! Learning language and having those experiences could have opened so many more doors for my career. The school is located in Arlington, but provides a world wide experience right here in the heart of Jacksonville. The school is now enrolling and you can find more about this local school and how to register by clicking HERE!
