Darnell-Cookman began its life as the first teacher's preparation college in the state of Florida, and in its long history it has served as an elementary school, alternative education center, and a gifted magnet middle. Our real story began, though, in 2007, when we were awarded a grant from the Department of Education to become our nation's first 6th through 12th grade college preparatory program with a focus in the medical arts and sciences.
In the mere six years since the awarding of the grant, the Vikings have amassed a impressive record of achievements. Our students have developed new suturing techniques to help in hysterectomy recovery, the have placed in the Intel international science and engineering fair, and they have been accepted to prestigious colleges such as Princeton University. No less distinguished, members of our faculty have been named DCPS teacher of the year and have been honored with fellowships to the National Science Teachers Association and the Princeton Scholars Program.
Having recently made the Washington Post's list of the most rigorous public schools in the nation, it is clear that Darnell-Cookman School of the Medical Arts is poised to continue our tradition of excellence into the future.
