The Zoo and Gardens will end the week by recognizing the first birthday of female western lowland gorilla, Gandai, on Sept. 28 with special enrichment and activities for guests. Guests and staff will join in singing “happy birthday” at 10 a.m. when the gorillas are released on exhibit and her keepers will bottle feed her at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Donations collected for Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE) will also be entered into a drawing for a Behind-the-Scenes tour of African Forest.
Gandai’s story has touched the Zoo’s community since her birth in 2018. She was hand-reared by keepers and eventually introduced to a surrogate mother and family group after being rejected by her deaf birth mother. Every milestone Gandai reaches is a celebration and testament to the dedication of the Zoo staff that helped to raise her.
