Awesome Aardvark, “First-Coast Friz” will utilize his amazing abilities, especially his highly-developed hearing and sense of smell, to glimpse the future and forecast the arrival of spring on Sunday, Feb. 2. Guests are invited to this special event at 10 a.m. in the Jacksonville Zoo and Garden’s African Forest near the gorilla exhibit.
Ten-times bigger and far-superior to groundhogs in nearly every way, aardvarks are one of the world’s largest burrowing animal. This mammal native to Africa shares many similar habits with woodchucks, but aardvarks simply do them all better. Aardvarks dig faster, make deeper burrows, are threatened by more dangerous predators, and in a delightful twist of irony, their Afrikaans name even means “earth pig,” which is undeniably better than “ground hog.”
