About Modesky Park
Modesky Park is located in the Oak Harbor subdivision of Atlantic Beach, southwest of the Mayport Naval Station. Atlantic Beach incorporated in 1925 and became part of Jacksonville during consolidation in 1968, while retaining its municipal charter and local government. After platting the neighborhood in 1961, Hugh Edwards began developing the approximately 800 home sites. He also constructed the park and a nearby boat ramp, which he donated to Duval County in 1963 and 1964 respectively. The park was named for two seven-year old brothers who were tragically killed by a motorist while walking along the shoulder of Mayport Road in December 1961. The Modesky family lived a few blocks from the park on Sebago Avenue. The City of Jacksonville expanded the one-acre park with the purchase of an adjacent 4.6 acres in December 2001.
