About Scott Park
Scott Park is located in northwest Jacksonville, on the grounds of the George Washington Carver Elementary School that was built in 1958. Carver was one of America’s greatest educators and agricultural researchers. For the use of students and the general public, Duval County leased a portion of the grounds for use as a Negro playground prior to desegregation. By 1965, the park had been named for Dr. John I. E. Scott (1901-1981), a Negro educator and author, who was also the first publisher of the Negro Educational Review. A native of Jamaica, he became an American citizen in 1932 and served in the local school system for 30 years, first as a principal and later as the director of Negro education in Duval County. As of 2006, the City and the School Board have a joint-use agreement for the park, which hosts the youth baseball and football games of the Inner City Athletic Association.
