About Simonds-Johnson Park
Simonds-Johnson Park is located at the intersection of 28th Street and Moncrief Rd. in northwest Jacksonville. In 1955, the City purchased the property from members of the Simonds family and a couple named Denham. Many neighborhood youngsters have benefited from its athletic facilities such as professional athletes Ken Burroughs of the Houston Oilers and Leonard (Truck) Robinson of the Washington Bullets. A community center was built on the grounds in 1957, and it received a major renovation in 1993. When sports activities waned in the 1980’s, the Police Athletic League sponsored athletic programs that re-invigorated the park. Facilities were refurbished by Builders Care, the center is the site of the 1K Nation partnership with the City to provide afterschool enrichment. The parcel on the corner near the basketball courts former site of a commercial building was purchase to expand Simond Johnson Park. The parcel was previously forclosed and owned by the bank. The City was able to aquire the parcel for $3,056.00 in August of 2009. The parcel will provide additional space for parking at the popular neighborhood park.
