Timucuan Parks Foundation invites the community to join them for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 19. This year, TPF, in coordination with Talbot Islands State Parks and Friends of Talbot Islands, will be cleaning up the beach at Little Talbot Island State Park. Volunteers should meet at the park at 12157 Heckscher Drive by 8:45 a.m. to allow time to enter the park and sign in before the 9 a.m. start. The park fee will be waived for volunteers, and rangers at the gate will direct participants to the southernmost parking lot.
Volunteers will pick up litter along the wrack line and at the rock jetty. Participants should wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get dirty. Please bring a full reusable water bottle and gloves, if available. Volunteers may want to bring a backpack or a clip to hold their water bottle, leaving their hands free to pick up litter. TPF will provide gloves for those who don’t have them, as well as trash bags, grabbers, granola bar snacks and extra water to refill bottles.
The MLK Day of Service event is expected to last until noon, and volunteers of all ages are welcome. Those under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or youth leader. Volunteers are eligible for community service hours. To receive a waiver or for more information, visit https://www.timucuanparks.org/volunteer/.
MLK Day of Service is a national call to action designated by Congress as a day for Americans to volunteer and serve the community in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy.
